Anxiety Therapy in Torrance, CA

Miwa Emi, Therapist in Torrance, California Specializing in Over-achieving women and anxiety

If you are an overachieving, bicultural woman who are tired of pushing through, this is for you.

You wake up feeling completely exhausted. You didn’t sleep well, again. Your eyes open around 3:00 AM, and after that, your mind won’t stop. You lie there in the dark replaying everything you missed at work, afraid of making the same mistakes. Your thoughts jump from one thing to the next, faster than you can keep up.

You try to follow all the recommendations. You take the supplements your doctor suggested. You do what you’re supposed to do. But nothing really helps. Your brain just keeps going.

You tell yourself you’ll exercise, but when the time comes, you can’t. The exhaustion is too heavy. The disappointment sets in, followed by the questions that won’t leave you alone. Am I going to keep gaining weight? What if I get sick? What happens if I burn out and can’t work anymore? What happens to everything you’ve built?

Your thoughts move so fast it feels like you have no control, like being strapped into a roller coaster you never chose. You keep asking yourself, why am I like this?

And then the guilt shows up.

You question whether you’re a good daughter, a good mother. You think about your children and wonder if you’ve somehow failed them. You feel pulled in different directions, trying to meet expectations while also holding everything together in your own life.

You question whether you’re a good daughter, especially when your parents are far away. You feel the heavy, quiet weight of cultural expectations and wonder if all your sacrifices have been worth it. You think about your children and wonder if you’ve somehow failed them. You feel pulled between two worlds, trying to meet everyone's expectations while holding everything together in your own life.

On paper, your life looks good. You have a solid job. You perform well. You’ve worked hard to get here. People rely on you. People respect you.

But inside, you feel completely drained.

You used to have energy for friends, for hiking, for dinners. Now, your weekends disappear into scrolling on your phone because you don’t have anything left to give. You stop replying to messages. You tell yourself you’ll reach out later, but later never comes.

You catch yourself wondering, what am I doing? Is this really my life? What have I actually accomplished?

You feel empty. You feel sad. And underneath all of it, there is a quiet fear that maybe this is just how life will always be.

But something in you knows this isn’t sustainable.

Something needs to change.

You are ready for a real change

You’ve tried a little meditation here and there. You go to the gym, you do the “self-care” but you seldom really feel good and content. You aren’t sure exactly what you need, if you need a counselor, a coach, a psychiatrist, or a psychologist. But, you know you need something, and you are tired of waiting to fully enjoy your life.

My name is Miwa, I am an counselor in Torrance, California and I Can Help

I’m Miwa Emi, a bilingual (English and Japanese) Licensed Clinical Social Worker in California. I help overachieving bicultural women who feel exhausted, anxious, and weighed down by cultural and family expectations learn how to feel safe in their own bodies again.

For over 20 years in social work, including more than a decade in medical settings supporting clients with chronic illness and high stress, I’ve seen how deeply anxiety can take hold, not just in your thoughts, but in your body, your relationships, and your sense of self.

Many of the women I work with are used to holding everything together. On the outside, they are successful, responsible, and dependable. But on the inside, they are overwhelmed, constantly thinking, constantly worrying, and quietly burning out.

In our work together, we won’t focus on trying to get rid of anxiety or force it to disappear.

Instead, we begin to understand what your mind and body have been trying to do for you, and gently support your system in learning that it doesn’t have to stay in survival mode all the time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy in Torrance

  • In California, psychotherapy is provided by licensed professionals like Psychologists, LMFTs, LPCCs, and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs).

What sets an LCSW apart? As an LCSW, I hold a Master's degree from Columbia University and completed over 3,000 hours of clinical training and rigorous state board exams to diagnose and treat mental health conditions. The primary difference in my approach is the holistic lens: rather than just treating symptoms, I explore how your relationships, environment, and cultural background impact your overall well-being.

  • It depends on your insurance. I am not in-network with any insurance providers. You could get reimbursed for your sessions if your plan has out-of-network benefits.

I use a service called Thrizer that automatically submits superbills for you and allows you to pay a reduced fee after meeting your deductible. Please use this link to check whether you have Out-Of-Network benefits: You can check your benefits here.

  • 50 minute sessions are $175.

  • Yes, I do! I provide culturally sensitive psychotherapy in both Japanese and English. Because of my clinical license, my telehealth practice is exclusively for clients residing in California.
